Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
