A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
