The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
